Bremer/McCoy’s album Natten stands as a distinctive exploration of sound and atmosphere, blending the subtle beauty of Scandinavian aesthetics with the rich, earthy tones of dub and roots reggae. Emerging from Copenhagen, Denmark, the duo—comprised of Jonathan Bremer on upright bass and Morten McCoy on keys and tape loops—has crafted a musical landscape that invites introspection and evokes a sense of journey. Their Scandinavian roots are unmistakable, yet their music reaches far beyond, weaving in influences from distant lands and cultures.

Jonathan Bremer and Morten McCoy have been collaborators for nearly a decade, and their deep musical chemistry is evident throughout Natten. The album marks their fifth studio release, following Enhed (2013), Ordet (2015), Forsvinder (2016), and Utopia (2019). Over the years, Bremer/McCoy’s sound has evolved gradually, with each album building on the last in a natural and unforced manner. Their music is often compared to the work of Swedish jazz legend Jan Johansson, whose Jazz på Svenska (1964) is a touchstone in Scandinavian jazz. However, where Johansson’s music is deeply rooted in Swedish folk traditions, Bremer/McCoy expand their reach, integrating the rhythmic pulse of dub and reggae with their Nordic sensibilities.
