Spain is a country brimming with wonders waiting to be uncovered. From the inviting Mediterranean beaches to its rich historical cities and diverse cultural experiences, the appeal of this vibrant nation is unmistakable. Indulging in its incredible cuisine, steeped in tradition yet bursting with innovation, and immersing oneself in its multi-faceted culture, where every corner reveals a new layer of history and artistry, is a delightful experience. However, Spain is more than just its iconic cities – it's a vast and diverse country, with each region offering its own unique culture, traditions, and landscapes to explore.
Among Spain's myriad treasures, Barcelona stands out as a must-visit destination. For me, it has long been a dream to visit this city, with its art, music, sports, historical figures, and architecture like Gaudí's creations. My fascination with Barcelona began in my teenage years when my parents traveled in the ‘80s along the coastal cities from Monaco to Barcelona and Malaga, bringing back items, including my first-ever computer. Around that time, Freddie Mercury's collaboration with Montserrat Caballé was a big hit, and the city hosted the Olympics with Ryuichi Sakamoto's music, further igniting my interest in this vibrant place. With its captivating blend of ancient history, modernist architecture, and dynamic energy, Barcelona has long resonated with visitors from around the globe, including myself.
When an invitation to visit Spain arrived from my friend, musician Oliver Sammouillan, I took the opportunity to have Barcelona as the first stop. Stepping into the city felt like entering a vibrant tapestry of culture and artistry, with Gaudí's iconic works guiding my exploration of its architectural marvels that continue to captivate the world. Arriving at the city center via the R2N train from El Pratt’s T2 terminal, I found myself in front of Casa Batlló, one of Gaudí's marvels, as soon as I stepped onto the street from the station. One doesn't need to know much about architecture or art to appreciate Gaudí's works and what makes them special.
With a plan in mind, I dropped my belongings at the hotel, picked up the Barcelona Press Card at the Tourist Office, and set off on my adventure. My first stop was Park Güell, where I was immediately struck by the whimsical and colorful architecture. No visit to Barcelona would be complete without paying homage to the masterpieces of Antoní Gaudí, the visionary architect whose influence permeates every inch of the city. From there, I visited the Gaudí Experience 4D cinema, immersing myself in a video showcasing the world of Antoni Gaudí's visionary designs. The Sagrada Familia, with its awe-inspiring architecture, left me in absolute wonder.
Despite the crowds, I managed to explore key sights such as the Picasso Museum, Moco Museum, Gabriel Garcia Marces library, the Gothic Casa Batlló, and Milà. As if that wasn't enough, I also visited the Museum of Egyptian Art, Palau de Musica de Catalunya, and Parc de la Ciutadella, La Rambla.
From the avant-garde structures that punctuate the skyline to the ancient cobblestone streets of the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona is a city of contrasts, each corner offering a new discovery. While many popular spots are within walking distance of each other, there's always the possibility of stumbling upon something new – whether it's a timeless jazz basement, a speakeasy hidden behind a fridge door, or a secret garden square overflowing with charm and history.
Barcelona’s vibrant energy and the richness of its cultural heritage made my short visit a memorable one. I am eagerly looking forward to exploring more of this beautiful city in the coming period.
